In the 1970s, he worked as a session guitarist, keyboardist, and organist for film music composers and directors, while also playing guitar in a band-for-hire. After he got hired as a musical assistant to Kannada film composer G.K. Venkatesh, he worked on 200 film projects mainly related to Kannada cinema. During this period, Ilayaraja even began penning his scores. With time & immense hard work, he became a well-known personality in the Indian music industry.
